This is our Day 3 in Amsterdam – the sun was shining and there was very little wind – perfect weather for our next adventure – a trip by bike to Broek in Waterland, roughly a 15 km ride.
Did not have a map or anything – althogh it would help a lot – only the instructions from the story which inspired us in the first place: Follow your heart in Amsterdam.
Hired bikes from a rental shop near the train station: Mac Bike – the only place with a dropping point opened after 6.00. And red looks good in photographs.
Time for me to remember how to ride a bike after a few good years…Jo has been really patient with me on this one.
Next we went to the ferry behind the Central Train Station – here we are, waiting to cross the river Ij – ferry to Buiksloot. Lots of people arriving from the other side. The ferry ride is free.
After leaving the ferry we followed the cycling path and kept an eye on the ‘Broek in Waterland‘ road sign: Don’t miss the first one which comes very soon, go right at the blue house !
Incredible peacefull scenary – minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.
Cross the bridge and again follow the signs to ‘Broek in Waterland‘.
Short stop – hoping we are on the right track. We were.
A few of Jo s photos.
Arriving in Broek in Waterland – Very tired, hot, thirsty and hungry. All sorted at a local small restaurant De Witte Swaen. Mint tea, orange juice and a traditional pizza on a pancake.
An hour around the village – lovely, charming typical old-Dutch atmosphere and wooden houses painted in soft colours.
Saint Nicholas Church – The originally 14-th century church was rebuilt in 1628, after Spanish troops burnt the village in 1573. Thorough renovations in 1989 revealed long – lost frescoes of cherubs and fruit garlands on the ceiling.
On our way back to Amsterdam. Really hot now, but very pleased already with the day.
Returned the bikes at the dropping point ( past the library) – it is almost evening.
Next we used a tip found on the net – the Library has a very good canteen on the top floor with a great view and a great tomato soup.
And now dragging my feet back home – hoping I can still walk tomorrow.
